You’re probably not going to find a lot of information on forensic photography. The truth is, this is an area of photography that your typical photographer does not get into. You’re dealing with taking photos of people who have been brutally murdered and an assortment of other crimes. Forensic photography is not for the weak stomach. But just what is involved in becoming a forensic photographer? The course outline may not rival going to medical school, but it’s quite a handful.

As with all other types of photography, a forensic photographer first has to learn the basics of the equipment that is used such as cameras, lenses, filters, flash, tripods, types of film and a number of other items that are considered basic equipment for forensic photography. The list is as long as King Kong’s right arm.

The next thing that needs to be learned and understood is that forensic photography is technical photography. Photos must be correctly exposed, must have a maximum depth of field so that the photos are sharp and in focus and must be free from distortion. In other words, the photo must be as close to what the human eye sees as possible and still uncover things that can’t be easily seen by the human eye. Not an easy task.

The photographer must learn about flash and night photography. Many crimes happen at night and the photos have to be taken at the time of the finding. This includes learning everything about dedicated, automatic and electronic flash, including what problems you can expect to run into with each. Troubleshooting is critical in forensic photography.

Then there is a whole course on the purpose of forensic photography so the photographer knows why he is taking the photos he is taking. This includes recording the original crime scene, recording all evidence, providing a permanent visual record and understanding the admissibility of photographic evidence.

Then there is a course on what they call general crime scene photography. This course covers the basics of crimes regardless of the kind. These are procedures that need to be followed regardless of what has happened whether it be a robbery or a murder.

After this course there is a more in depth course, or series of courses, on specific crimes such as homicides, suicides, burglaries, assaults, traffic accidents and injuries. Each one of these incidents requires certain procedures that are specific only to that particular crime.

For example, with homicides color film must be used. Photographs must be taken of the exterior and interior of the building. The photographer must also take photos of the body itself from as many as five different angles, the room the body was found in, the adjoining rooms, close up of body wounds, any weapons found, any trace of evidence such as blood, any signs of a struggle, any signs of prior activity to the homicide, such as drink glasses on a table (maybe they knew each other) and all views that witnesses had if there were any.

You don’t need to have knowledge about photography to enroll in a photography school. If you have interest in photography and you are keen to learn, an online course or a night class in a well-established photography school is the perfect way to begin.

Most online schools that teach photography will let you learn at your own pace. This is very practical for any person who is holding down a full time job and can only spare a few hours per week. If you are about to start a photography course, don’t rush it. My advice is to take your time and learn at a pace that will suit your lifestyle.

But, before you start, you should check out all the different courses available. If you are new to photography you will first need to learn the technical side. This will involve a certain amount of study and learning and should include practical work.

Image submission should be an important part of any course you enroll in. This is where the photography school will give you assignments to carry out. After finishing the assignment you submit the images to the school. The teacher will review your work and give you feedback that will help you improve.

All material about the course should be included in the starting price. You should also receive a diploma when you finish course.

A good school should teach you all technical and creative aspects of photography, with some of the better courses teaching you how to sell and market your images. Photography is an art, and like all types of art, it takes time to master the trade.

Some of the most vital aspects of photography are exposure, composition and understanding light. If a course or school does not cover these topics, the chances are that you will not be a successful photographer and the course will be a waste of money.

All online courses will offer you great results. If the course only lasts for six or seven lessons, the chances are that there will not be enough information covered to give you the necessary skills to develop your photography into a career.

Some of the more advanced schools will teach you darkroom skills. While these may not seem important to you, they will give you a great insight into the theory behind printing. Your school should teach every detail about photography so that you are well equipped to take on paid assignments when finished.

The best schools will give you the choice of learning online or through correspondence. My advice is to study photography through a correspondence course. This will allow you to set up a study timetable that suits your lifestyle and give you time between lessons to reflect on your work.

A good course should not cost any more than five hundred dollars and will offer some form of a certificate when you have finished. You don’t need to have fancy camera gear – if you own a basic digital camera you are ready to start.

Digital photography is a lovely hobby with many practitioners. It takes you all over the map and gets you a lot of attention and excitement. You’ll find that you’ll get a lot more attention from your family and friends for your exciting hobby. It’s an extremely fulfilling pastime on its own, and you can also use your skills professionally to earn a reasonable income. Several photography experts produce above 6 figures annually. It is very simple to start up and you may make that sum at the start working from your own home. That way you can have minimal cost to do business.

But, for anyone not by now an expert at digital photography, it’ll do you a lot of benefit to know basic principles of photography from a professional. You could find numerous digital photography lessons, many on the internet and many at your local community centers, or neighborhood training colleges.

Photography courses might cover such issues as picture, optics, and lighting. You learn to choose the appropriate lens and digital camera perfect for activity, the very best backgrounds to use, how to arrange your pictures properly under different illumination situations, how to arrange artificial light, how to make use of natural light, where one can find the very best shots, panoramic areas, how to edit your images, plus much more.

It will also supply you with a group where you can share your activities and get ideas from several other photography lovers in the discipline. They can also provide wonderful easy methods to configure your precise photographic camera model many different shot options.

A career as a wedding photographer can be both lucrative and rewarding but in these recession hit days it can be a hard business to get into. The professional wedding photographer is competing with the part-time amateur who may have the latest digital equipment and feels that through contacts and acquaintances having a new part-time job can be quite appealing. It’s not hard now for anyone to set up an attractive looking website with decent looking photographs and try to convince potential couples to sign up for their services.

So careful planning is required. A wedding day will be one of the most important days in a couple’s life so you need to get things right. There can be no redo. As a wedding photographer you will have a very responsible job. But with the right preparation you can be in business.

Qualifications for the Wedding Photography can be obtained through a further or higher education course resulting in a City & Guilds certificate or BTEC. Whilst qualifications can be useful to get a foothold in the business, experience is much more important.

One way of gaining experience is to work as an assistant photographer. Some of the bigger studios employ photographic assistants to which you could apply or you could offer your services on a freelance basis. This will help develop your photography skills and give you an insight as to how the business works. Basically, the assistant photographer helps to ensure that a shoot goes according to plan. This may involve practical tasks such as setting up the lighting, taking meter readings or transporting the equipment to the site.

After getting the practical experience you may want to set up your own business. As a wedding photographer you will be running a small business and with most small businesses nothing comes naturally. It may be useful to take a small business course and this will help with accounts and marketing. A business plan may be useful and most business courses will teach how to do this.

As a professional wedding photographer quality is much more important than quantity. If you deliver quality work to your clients then referrals through word of mouth will come easily. You will need to keep up to date with the latest photographic technology, trends and imaging software and with access to the internet it will be a continuous learning process.

Have you ever wondered why the professional photos you see are so stunning, while yours may need a little work? Here are 3 steps included in most digital photography courses that will quickly boost your photography to the next level. If you are checking out any photography digital courses, be sure they cover the following:

1. Subject matter…your photo needs a star!

Determine one major area of interest and do everything you can to eliminate any sort of distractions. If too much is happening in a photo, the viewer’s eye bounces all over the place and doesn’t know where to land!

A too busy photograph is visually confusing AND exhausting!

This is a situation where less is more. Think of it like the star in a movie. Everything needs to keep our attention focused ONLY on them!

2. Fill the frame…your star should fill the entire frame.

I’m constantly seeing photographs where the photographer was trying to get a shot of their new puppy or kitten and in the final result, the pet is nothing more than a tiny blob way down in the in the corner.

Get right down at the pet’s level and use a lens that will allow you to completely fill the frame. If you don’t have interchangeable lenses, get closer. There’s a famous saying in the photo world that goes something like…”If you don’t like your photos, get closer.”

3. Where to focus?

Often we are confronted with depth of field issues. SOMETHING in our photo needs to be in sharp focus while other areas will be a little softer.

I frequently get asked the question: “What should I focus on?”

If you’re shooting a living subject, focus on the eyes. It is said they are the windows to the soul. Whether or not that is true, it certainly IS true that the eyes are what we will focus our attention on when looking at a photo.

Your photograph could be in sharp, crisp focus across the entire frame, but if the eyes are a little bit soft, no one will like the photo and will complain that it is out of focus.

If the eyes are in sharp focus and the rest of the photo is a little soft, most people will praise the photo and never even notice the softer areas.

With the rise of the digital photography revolution, we get so caught up in the technology and the ease of getting the photos into our computer (so that we can edit them in Photoshop), we are literally losing our ability to create beautiful images.

If the thought; “I’ll fix it in Photoshop” ever crosses your mind, take your finger off the shutter button and rethink the image. You’ll be glad you did.

When looking for online digital courses, photography digital courses can teach you how to quickly get control of your camera. Work to learn the techniques the masters use and get the shot in the camera.

Want to make your outdoor photographs more dramatic? Modifying the sunlight is simple to do and can alter the mood of your photographs substantially. The good thing about this technique is it is really simple and requires little equipment for low or no cost.

All you need for this technique is good sunlight, a model or any subject and one reflector. You can buy a reflector for low cost or you can make one from scrap. This can be large card, Styrofoam sheeting, a poster board, a mirror, or anything that will reflect light. If you choose board you need to paint one side so that it reflects well. White and silver are the most common colors to paint the surface; these will be the most reflective. Also, the bigger the reflector the better; this is especially desirable if you are photographing people.

Mid afternoon sunlight provides great saturated colors for photography and is ideal for reflecting light back to one side of your subject. Unlike a studio light, you can’t change the angle of the sun to suit your lighting requirements. But you can use reflectors to help you.

Using a reflector is easy; just position so the sun hits the reflector and bounces back onto the subject. Since you cannot control the sun, you will need to manipulate the placement and angle of the reflector and subject so you get the directional light you want.

Photographers usually use a reflector to fill harsh shadows created by direct sunlight. The sun serves as your main or key light and the reflector serves as your fill light. Use the reflector to fill in the shadow area of your subject. The amount of fill is determined by you, but is conditional on the size of the reflector, the reflection capacity, closeness to the subject and the strength of the sunlight.

Reflectors are a simple method for throwing additional light to subject areas that need more light. Pack one in your kit next time you make some portraits in the outdoors. Reference to a suitable online photography course would open up further techniques in lighting, reflectors and other lighting devices for your photography.

Photographing The Bride

Your wedding photography technique will improve dramatically if you pay particular attention throughout the day to the Brides appearance. She is the most important person in your photographs. Before firing the shutter always check that she is looking her best. Pay specific attention to the stance of the Bride. She should be posed by asking her to stand at a slight angle to the camera. The foot nearest to the camera should be extended forward three or four inches towards the camera with the knee slightly bent. Now ask her to transfer her weight to the foot farthest away from the camera.

Her head should be turned towards the camera and tilted slightly. Avoid straight limbs, for example arms and wrists should always suggest a gentle curving, almost flowing movement.

Flowing Lines

When you are composing a full-length portrait of the bride, make sure that you position the bouquet where you would a fig leaf! When you place the bouquet in this position the arms will look more graceful.Ensure a gentle curvature of the elbows. If you allow the bride to hold the bouquet higher than this, you cover the detail in the waistline and body of the dress, and you put harsh angles into the arms. Not graceful or pleasing to the eye. The most important single thing to remember when photographing women at any event is that they must look graceful. Also remember to keep the bride at a slight angle to the camera, never directly face on. Approximately 30 degrees is flattering. You can get away with less of an angle with thinner brides.Elevate her index finger slightly above the others for a graceful hand and be sure to show the side or edge of the hand and not the palm or back of the hand. When photographing the bride and groom together, or the bride with any male, angle the shoulders so that the male is wider to the camera than the bride. The last thing you want to do is make the bride look bigger than the groom.

Tilting the Head

Head tilts are another important subject when photographing the bride. Your goal is always flatter the subject to the best of your ability. There are two basic head tilts, masculine and feminine. Masculine head tilts place the head leaning down toward the front of the body while feminine head tilts have the head tilting down over the shoulder toward the back of the person. Feminine head tilts look best on thinner brides.

The Heavier Bride

If you are photographing a heavier bride try to avoid any shots in sitting positions, they always look better standing.

If you are photographing a group, including a heavy bride, keep her standing, turned at an angle to reduce her width, bouquet lowered and if possible, place her slightly behind another person so that one arm and one leg are hidden. This is the only exception to my earlier direction of always having the bride and groom at the front and unobscured!

Two-day courses are for those who do not want recognition of a master degree in photography or for those who do not have much time to spend on a regular degree in photography. Most regular courses are designed keeping amateurs and newcomers in mind but for professional photographers, weekend or online courses along with other photography workshops are the best choice. With a weekend photography course, you will learn to combine photography concepts and techniques with a proper understanding of composition.

Basic understanding about the different types of photography is significant when you are looking for a new course because most weekend courses are designed for photographers who are looking for more information on a particular niche. If you are looking for a course that can provide you with the general insight to photography techniques such as editing, lighting, composition, exposure, light and shade, a beginner level course is the best deal.

There are many streams of photography such as:

Commercial- In commercial photography, your basic job is to click pictures that can be used in various marketing tools such as the company’s website, brochures and other marketing materials. You are limited to click pictures of the company’s employees or products but chances for exploring your creativity are almost limitless. If this type of photography fascinates you, you should look for a course that leaves you with more insights on this niche.

Fashion – In fashion photography, you will be mostly involved with promoting yourself and picture taking is just a part of your job because the competition is quite tough in this industry.

More and more people are finding photography interesting enough to be pursued as a profession. The cameras that are available in the market today are of high quality and also offer excellent features. With some knowledge in the basics of photography, creativity and also by using some techniques it is possible to obtain excellent images. Some people start as amateurs and then become professionals. Such people will benefit a lot from apt guidance.

Several customers offer testimony to the fact that instead of learning everything on the job, it is better to start the photography career with a course. Courses for beginners are quite easy to find. Specialized courses are available if you are already aware of the basics. Online courses are also popular these days if you are already working part-time somewhere. Such courses are also suitable for students who have spare time which they want to put to good use.

The following are the benefits tied to learning photography in a formal manner:

- You will understand the key technical features of cameras.
- You will come to know the effect of lights on images.
- You will be taught the important factors for shooting different occasions.
- You will know about which lens and flash to use independently.
- You will realize key creative ideas that can be put to use.
- You will become good in shooting black & white pictures too.

It is only by practicing these that a photographer will become an expert. You can also learn from the feedback provided by experts in the field after they review your work. The idea is to get the pictures right the first time they are shot. It is also important to use the existing conditions in the best possible way. As digital cameras are in vogue nowadays, computer knowledge too has become necessary. It is better to experiment and clarify issues then and there for gaining good understanding of concepts.
